I've never really considered Vampires or Ghosts of Mars to be horror films. Rather they exude the feel of a western, which is a theme that John Carpenter has always wanted to use. On that note, I don't agree that he has "lost his way". I think he's just trying out different approaches to his films and he has succeeded considerably, in my opinion. These two films albeit somewhat modern, sit comfortably beside The Thing, They Live, and In the Mouth of Madness.
