I agree on the substandard CGI, but having said that, and looking at your other comments, it seems many people come to
Ichi expecting a flash and macho action movie.
It isn't - it's another bizarre concoction from the mind of Takashi Miike (based on the extreme Manga), and as anyone who follows his films will agree, heroics and straightforward logic are not necessary.
Ichi in the movie is pathetic, perverted and damaged - Kakihara is similarly off-the-rails, but more sadistic.
P.S. There are many cut versions of this film in circulation, which may be the problem here as the sickeningly realistic beating of the prostitute, hook-hanging and double nipple-slicing scenes could hardly be considered restrained.
