There are movies that define genres...these are seldom "lived up to", the combination of elements simply arent there for the majority of films of the same genre to follow.
Sure, certain elements are present...and they can make pretty good attempts (of course, they can make pretty SHIThouse attempts too) but much of the time, that certain precise mixture...simply cannot be replicated. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I mean if somebody DID manage to pull off a near flawless attempt, their film would be called a knock-off.
However, enjoying a genre of film will not come easy if you have comparison hangups, I myself have attempted to train myself out of it, which IS difficult.
I'm not entirely happy with the zombie genre as a whole...there have been MANY crap zombie flicks...in fact, too many. But then again, I could say that about horror in general.
But, there ARE some that are really worth watching, that make the whole "quest" worthwhile, but essentially this applies to all kinds of films. It's just a matter of lowering your expectations...not TOO much, just a little...and you may find that you have the chance to enjoy films when you're not nitpicking about them.
In a more specific answer to the question initially asked - No.
I wouldn't wanna miss out on things like "shaun of the dead" and "versus", both of which I love. Besides, even if a zombie movie is crappy...unless it's TOTALLY bad, I still enjoy seeing zombies get all shot up, run over, chopped, beaten up, and punished punished PUNISHED before they drop...yup, I enjoy that more than anything.
