Lycanthrope as far as I know is a disease whereas an infected person or animal must transmit the disease thru saliva or blood contact. Settlers probably saw the indians performing rituals dressed in animal clothing and acting animal like thus the reason for why they think werewolves exist. Indians used Peyote, a hallucinagen, to alter there state of mind making them feel animal like. I have a book about changing oneself into an animal but not on this plane of existance. Want to see a great wolf film check out Wolfen, it is an older film and Gregory Hines is in it, sorry he doesnt dance in that one, but it is pretty good. There is a fair explanation in the film about the relationship between the Indians and wolves.
