Officers Unaware Of Warrant For Teen Murder Suspect; Name Misspelled

Seattle, Washington - Police officers who stopped a teenager and released him before he allegedly shot and killed a man in West Seattle did not know there was a warrant out for his arrest.

The officers contacting the 17-year-old checked for warrants, but because his name was misspelled on an outstanding warrant, officers were not aware of it and did not arrest him. That warrant was for a property crime, according to a statement police released yesterday.

About an hour after that contact, Mike Robb, a popular high school tennis coach who lived in West Seattle, was killed after he stopped along West Marginal Way Southwest. The 17-year-old was arrested Monday as a suspect in the shooting and is expected to be charged today with murder in King County Superior Court.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer does not normally name suspects until charges are filed.

Police officials declined to discuss the details of their earlier contact with the suspect Sunday, but in the released statement, officials said the teen was never placed under arrest.

Officers contacted the teen as part of a burglary investigation, the statement said, but it was a second person with the teen who was arrested. Although the teen was not the subject of the arrest report, the department declined to release it.

Robb, 46, was a married father with a toddler daughter. A memorial for family and friends is scheduled for this afternoon.
