Freak Accident - Teenager Killed By Boat Anchor

Teen Dies After Getting Hit In Head With Boat Anchor

Madison East High School Mourning Trevor Knight

Madison, Wisconsin -- The Madison teen hit in the head with a boat anchor last week died Sunday at UW Hospital.

Trevor Knight, 17, was boating with friends on Thursday when the accident happened.

Knight had just completed his junior year at East High School, where he was recently a member of the prom court. He was also a member of the Tyrol Basin racing team.

Counselors are being made available at the school to students and staff.

"We're personally calling a lot of the students that were personally effected, having been at the hospital visiting," said Bea Bonet, 11th grade principal at East High. "So we have a list of kids that we're giving extra attention to and calling home and checking how they're doing."

Dane County sheriff's officials said it was a "freak" boating accident. Knight was driving a boat on Lake Mendota off Warner Park with several friends aboard when, after the group stopped to swim, they didn't pull up the boat anchor, and the moving boat launched the anchor into the air, hitting Knight in the head.

Eyewitnesses said there was nothing they could do to help. Some said boaters need to be more careful.

"When they go out, they think it's like driving a car, and it's not even close to driving a car," said eyewitness Carl Fritzner.

Funeral Set For Thursday

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter Church on Sherman Avenue. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service.
