Letting them die slowly and then "killing" the zombie is selfish, it's like keeping someone who wont ever get better, and is in horrible pain, languish on life support because you cant bring yourself to end their pain. better they suffer than you.... I dont accept that. I think it is cruel.

Not to mention...it's never really been thoroughly explored as to how much "memory" a zombie is supposed to actually retain...I mean, for all we know, it could be like viewing the murders of their loved ones from inside, not being able to stop it - that there would be like putting them through a living hell too.
For these reasons, and for the reason of potentially having an emotion related fuckup whilst under attack, I'd get it done quickly, and efficiently, as much as it wrecked me to do it and make me feel like a fucking murderous asshole, I'd comfort them, and tell them everything was going to be allright, and have them at rest, right before I perforated their brain.
