No they don't. That's the point.
Forget all your Human reasoning. It's the Earth.
It has NOTHING to do with Man.
It's being doing things like this for millions of years and we just happen to be in the way now.
Forget all this very Human. clutching at some kind of logic, reasoning.
There was no 'reason' for it, there was no stopping it, nothing and nobody could have changed anything and if mankind had not been here it would have happened anyway (as it has been since the World existed).
This is an act of Nature. Man and his bullshit hang-ups, Gods and 'there has to be an answer' thinking is of no importance or validity.
