Well, there was this analysis done of the Looney Tunes cartoons once--to break them down and define their rules and patterns. One of the strongest rules was that the characters did not react in pain to the violent acts committed upon them. Fall off a cliff, blown up with dynamite, etc., but no scream of pain, generally speaking. They often just stand there for a second and then fall down.

But there were exceptions to this rule from time to time.

Porky Pig had a problem with a gopher once, and he tried to trap it and kill it, but never succeeded. At one point the gopher, smiling sweetly, popped up out of the ground and began strolling over to Porky in a really friendly way. Porky, being caught off-guard, watched the gopher strolling towards him, not noticing that the gopher was holding a big piece of wood behind its back. When the gopher got close enough, he HIT Porky on both his shins--WHACK! WHACK!--and then ran back to his hole really fast and disappeared.

The pain did not hit Porky for about two seconds. Then it hit him and he screamed, "EEEEEEEEE-YOW!!!!!" and crumpled to the ground in agony. I have always loved this scene.
