personally i think Nirvana was the turning point.
For the 1st time 'alternative' was embraced by the mainstream.
(i use alternative for the lack of a better name)
After Nirvana proved bankable a ton of bands jumped on the gravy train. Pearl Jam, then Creed, then every other band that wanted to sound like Perl Jam, Nirvana and Creed.
There 'bad ass' edgy bands have become mainstream pop.
With a few rare exceptions that are tough to find rock music has been stagnating like never before. Even the 70's seem brilliant and dynamic now compared to the mediochre dribble i hear on the radio now.
I go back to my music roots to hear variety. To hear something other than the tired formula of alternating lines and screamed chorus.
Another big reason is that its hard for older folks to identify with the youth angst themes from today .. it just isnt relevant to us.
I still try to keep current with whats out there.. and i have found a few really decent bands that are new ,,, but they are few and far between.
