Lots of people hated Jack Nicholson's performance, which I'll never understand because I thought the transformation from caring husband to raving madman was fantastic. Watching him stalk from room to room with an axe in his hand created some of the best scenes in the horror genre, the facial expressions are really creepy as well. Kubrick's direction brings it all together, the steady cam behind the tricycle turned out amazing and is a scene every horror fan knows. The only other movie that comes close IMO is Carrie, again a great diretor (DePalma) and acting (Spacek) is the reason it turned out so well. I'm not really a fan of his straight to tv movies, most are quite lame.

PS- Stand by Me is just as good as The Shining, I just decided to stick to his horror novels.
I agree with you Jack Nicholson was great in it my other favorites are The Stand,Salom's Lot,It,Needful Things
