i think Elaine Cunningham hit on the perfect god/worshipper relationship in Tangled Webs (sequal to Daughter of the Drow).
In the book, there are "norsemen" who the main character Liriel travels with. In Drow socciety, life is centered around the matriarchal worship of a spider goddess name Lolth. Lolth is a demon goddess. Fealty is everything.
The norsemen have an "arrangement" with theior gods. They do for the gods as long as the gods hold up their end of the bargain and do for them. If they do for the god, and there is no reciprocity, then fuck the god.
There is a great scene at the end *Spoiler* (DO NOT READ LOWER if you have nay intention of reading these books. Which you should, they are awsome)
Where Lireil actually lets Lolth enter her body as an Avatar to defeat their enemy, on the contingency that she does not harm any of lirel's allies.
of course, Lolth is psychotic and evil, so she starts killing everyone. Liriel is able to use the power to weaken the enemy so the fight is owon, then is able to cast out a GOD for breaking the terms of the agreement. its very cool.
