Horror comic covers....
I'm too young for the golden age of horror comics (EC's Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Horror, etc) but I just made it for the silver age--stuff like Creepy, Eerie and even the Marvel and DC counterparts like House of Mystery, Tomb of Dracula, Zombie, etc. Anyone else miss these lurid, bizzare covers as much as I do? They usually displayed an amptly endowed young woman being menaced by all sorts of ghouls and goblins, usually the monsters heavily influenced by Universal as much as EC, with lots of Dracula-like vamps and Larry Talbot werewolves. Also popular were gillmen and wrapped mummies, monsters that are quickly losing theire icon status (hell, they're even vanishing from Halloween decoration). Also popular were the monster fights which were always great. Dr Frankenstein with something on the slab was also a popular motif, as was the girl being sacrificed by hooded vamps. Lots of blood, clouds over the moon, drooping trees, and protruding nipples. Anyone remember this stuff as fondly as I do. Too bad I was too young to keep this stuff. I either flipped through the comics until they fell apart or tore off the covers to tape to my wall. But hell, that's what comics are there for, right? To be enjoyed, not collected!!!!
