Yes and no. He betrayed his own "philosophy" of killing what he would consider to be sinners. He took part in sin himself, and in turn was killed by another "cleanser of sins". Note that, as far as I can tell from the story, he's not part of a society of cleansers or anything like that, so the ending is pure irony. He takes part in the sin that he is trying to eradicate, and in turn is killed by someone else doing the same thing.
