Wow. I have never heard of DVD rot before ... and, fortunately, this has not yet happened to me. I know that at the Blockbuster my wife manages, she has a bottle of some sort of DVD restoration fluid, which does things like eliminate small scratches and basically resurface the disk. Unless the damage is severe, which it sounds like ShankS disc is totally fucked.

I have had some bad experiences with DVD players, though. My wife would bring home a brand new DVD, not even released to the public yet, and we would put it in one of our DVD players and it would begin to freeze up halfway through the film. This player does it with practically every DVD we have, now. It sucks ... but ... Players can always be replaced easily. It's hard to replace a collection that has fallen victim to rot.
