VHS recorders were a big ticket item back then. They were using the fact that you could watch one program while recording another as a big selling point. Like ShankS said, VHS tapes were expensive and had no real time frame for when they would be released. I purchased my first VHS machine around 81 or 82. I remember well the first movies I purchased were Halloween and Friday the 13th part 2. They cost me around $60-70 for the pair.
