A person cannot self-suffocate to the point of death, asleep or awake.
If they're asleep, the body will automatically wake itself up, at least some time before going into a lethal kinda asphixia.
If they're awake, unconsciousness MAY occur, but the hands wouldn't stay clamped after "lights out".
