I finished Shenmue. Never finished Part 2 though. I had the Xbox scratching discs issue which so called journalists never wanted to cover. I have to setup some time and make a bunch of backups if I ever want to play my unfinished Xbox games as I just don't trust the system. I found it funny when the 360 had all those problems.
But back to Shenmue, I think a lot of the hype was the Japanese setting and graphics at the time. I don't think the games sold that well. It wasn't the best "game" if you are looking for pure gameplay. The arcade games in them are more fun than the actual Shenmue game. But I think for people that wanted to go or live in Japan, being able to walk around a small town and explore stuff made the game worthwhile.
I remember fans being upset about not getting Part 2 on Dreamcast. I might end up getting the new collection on PS4. It will probably feel like a nostalgia trip. Finishing Part 2 will help me decide if I want to get Part 3.
