But the movie just losses it all at the last act where it strangely becomes dull, slow and tries to be a more serious & pretentious flick all of a sudden.

A case where the idea behind the story was much better than the actual movie. It was the evil kids concept turned upside down.
Doesn't help that you couldn't give a fuck about any of the kids, even tho you get a long boring build-up before the horror takes place.
But at least it wasn't found footage.

Watched the first half of the movie with the back of my neck, not feeling the need to turn around a single time. That's never a good sign.
