im looking for a way to start getting involved more with it, possibly working into an anthology in the future. I'd rather stay away from online (unless people truly believe thats the best way).

I wrote a book a while ago. Getting published in general is crazy hard. I ended up self publishing on Amazon just because I got tired of trying. I wrote mostly for myself anyway so I wasn't trying to make money on it.
Ive found for publishing short stories the only real option is to just hunt. If you have specific magazines your trying to get published in, you go to their website and search for a submissions area. A lot wont be accepting any, some will. But you have to follow the guidelines they lay out to a T or they will reject your submission.
Be well prepared for rejection. I sent my manuscript to about a hundred people and got so used to hearing no it became no big deal. Also, a lot of times it takes 6-10 weeks to even hear anything.
The other option is to look for other people building anthologies and submit to be added to theirs. Those are often really difficult to get and net you absolutely nothing except having been in a book. But its all part of the fun.
