Maggots Found In Patient's Nose At Virginia Hospital
Salem, Virginia (AP) - The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem has double-checked procedures for keeping out flies after a nurse found maggots in a patient's nose. Spokeswoman Ann Benois says the patient was unharmed, and was unaware of the problem until a nurse discovered it. She says the insects were removed with a sterile wipe. Benois calls it an isolated incident. Hospital officials could not recall a similar incident at the large health care facility for veterans. Benois says that officials believe a fly managed to the enter the area of the hospital where the patient was staying and laid eggs that were initially too small to be detected. She says all other patients in the unit were checked, with no other problems found. Benois says a review team responded to the hospital wing where the July 3rd incident to check for more flies and give hospital employees tips on keeping them out. |
