Run, don't walk ...

To your nearest Borders, Suncoast, Reel Collections, Best Buy -- wherever you get your movies -- and buy Aswang. I bought this film on a whim, reading that it was the first horror film to be presented at the Sundance Film Festival. It blew me away. I can officially say that this is now my favorite horror film of all time. I don't want to spend a lot of time here writing the details (I'll save that for the Indie forum -- and will probably write a review in the Contributor's Corner), but it has everything that makes a good horror film a GOOD horror film (in my opinion.) Think "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" meets "Rosemary's Baby" ... only, instead of a cult of Satan worshippers (or a cannibalistic family), you have a group of the creepiest vampires I have ever seen on screen. I can't believe I haven't heard anything about this movie from anyone here ... then again, I haven't heard of it myself until I bought it.

So ... I'm done.

ASS WANG? hmmmmmmm
Its not gay porn is it?

Egekrusher 07-08-2004 07:54 AM

I'll check it out. Sounds interesting.

I know it is a weird title. It is adapted from the word "Aswong" which is a Filipino vampire that feeds on the unborn. According to the box ... well, let me just type what it says on the back:

"This amazine gorefest was the first horror film ever screened at the Sundance Film Festival, where it caused a sensation in 1994. Aswang was immediately picked up for US distribution, retitled The Unearthing and cut for an 'R' rating. After a brief theatrical release, nervous video chains refused to carry the film and the shocker all but disappeared. This widescreen presentation is the first ever release of the unrated director's cut.

A pregnant girl enters into a strange pact, agreeing to play the part of someone else's wife. She is taken to a huge, isolated estate to give birth.

What happens next will haunt your nightmares for years ..."

Well, that's what the box says. This blurb really doesn't give the film justice. You have to see it.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this on my local video store shelf. I'll have to give it a rental. Thanks for the heads up.

when iwas little, like 7 my babysitter and her daughter (like a grandma and grandaughter, gradaughter being like 30) were watcing some asian horror movie.

the movie was called Aswang. in the houses here we dont see the roof from the inside, we have nice drywall. well the family in this movie was kidna poor, so u can see all the bannisters or beams supporting the roof. so the lady, who si pregnant, is sleeping in bed

so aswang, lwho looks like an old woman, is on top of one of the beams. so she opens her mouth and this long nasty tongue comes out. so u see her put her tongue in her belly, the lady gasps. then it cuts. then the next morning her sister comes in and she screams. her belly is all flat and everything was sucked out

man, i was gonna go to the philipines the next month to visit family and i cried so much. then turned out my family was rich as hell and they have nice dry walled ceilings like here so all was well with the world

:D I WILL NEVER EVER WATCH THIS MOVIE!! IT FUCKED ME UP AS A KID!!!!!!

Egekrusher 07-08-2004 08:42 AM

Ok, now I HAVE to see it.

fluffho 07-08-2004 08:47 AM

ege though im not sure if were talking about the same movies.

sounds like stingy iss talking abou a remake so im wondering how the 2 match up!!

at least from what i remmeber theres nothing about a woman pretending to be someones wife, shes just sleeping in bed and gets eaten.

but hey who knows maybr teh remake is better! but actually i usually prefer originals....

movieman64 07-08-2004 09:01 AM

I watched it again about a month ago, and I'm not that impressed. For me, the Mother and Son could/should have been much more dubious, and sinister characters. The daughter/sister in the cabin was the most effective element for me. Kind of like the dirty little secret we hide in the cellar. Being It was an indie it was much better regarding sets, props, and effects then the norm. I did watch it twice, so it's not that bad I guess.

That just my opinion

fluffho 07-08-2004 09:10 AM

i read some websites on the aswang remake and actually it sounds lame to me. it kind of sucks because it sounds like all the other lamo movies that they r making nowadays. puting in too much weird shit in it!

now im tempted to watch the ORIGINAL version... i can understand prety much like 97% of tagalog so i dunno, im tempted.. but this is shit from when i was little i dunno if i can do it! if i had a big sexy man next to me maybe.. but that wont be till like sept/oct (fuckin war fuckin up my love life)
