first horror flick

which was the first horror film you ever owned? my first was hellraiser purchased at the age of nine because i thought the scene where frank is ressurected by his brother larry's blood was really cool. so which was your first film, how old were you, and why did you choose it?

The first horror film I ever owned? Man ... that's a toughie. I recorded a lot of horror films from HBO when I was a kid ... that's usually how I got them. But I think the first horror film I actually went out and bought was The Fly remake with Jeff Goldblum. I bought it for two reasons: 1) I thought it was great. 2) Geena Davis was pretty hot back in the day, and she had that sex scene with Jeff (which is actually tame, but I was ... I dunno how old when I bought it).

yeah, i actually ran across a box of recorded VHS last night now that you mention it. strange how the world works, yes? anyway i still haven't had a chance to view them yet to see what i was into back in the day. i do remember that i had the first and second fly films but who knows if i'm lucky enough to find them in the 'ol box of gore. well, there may be hope yet;)

What Lies Beneath when I was probly 12 or so. Because it was when I was afraid of gore and hated horror movies, and it is very tame. I also thought (and still think) Harrison Ford is one sexy mofo.

I had a video tape when i was 12 that i had reecorded Robocop, Aliens and Alien, in that order.

this is a dificult one for me, simply because, when i was a kid, video players were a luxury home item, my dad did get us one eventually, it was the size of a garden shed and clunked like hell.

Films on tapes were also expensive and me not being old enough at the time to buy any decent horror, went without new films, and my parents wouldnt let us watch newish horror.

My dad did use to tape some of the old horror for us though, Boris Carloff, Peter Cushing and lots of the Hammer Horror stuff.

I reckon my first experience with real and proper horror, was when my older bro taped American Werewolf in london, we hid the tape and watched it when the parents went out..... some of it shit the life out of me lol

VHS recorders were a big ticket item back then. They were using the fact that you could watch one program while recording another as a big selling point. Like ShankS said, VHS tapes were expensive and had no real time frame for when they would be released. I purchased my first VHS machine around 81 or 82. I remember well the first movies I purchased were Halloween and Friday the 13th part 2. They cost me around $60-70 for the pair.
