5 Underrated Horror Films Of The Past 25 Years

Here is a list I have comprised of 5 horror films released over the past 25 years that are more than worthy of getting the recognition that other great films get.

1. Let The Right One In (2008)
Let The Right One In is a Swedish vampire film based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist. The story follows a boy named Oskar who is severely bullied at his school by fellow classmates. Oskar has no friends until a girl named Ely move into the apartment next to his. She motivates him to stand up for himself and along the way the two develop a bond that is so dark yet innocent.

2. Ravenous (1999)
Ravenous is a western horror film set during the Mexican American War. It stars Guy Pearce as a war hero who is very squimish and yet goes through extreme sickening measures to survive, including cannibalism.

3. May (2002)
May tells the story of the title character (Angela Bettis) who has been an outcast her entire life and just wants a friend. Any attempt she makes at opening herself up she gets crushed. She finally finds a way to "make" her friend and taps into her inner Frankenstein.

4. Event Horizon (1997)
Event Horizon stars Lawrence Fishburne in a horror/sci-fi crossover about a space crew sent on an expedition to recover a ship that vanished years before and has suddenly resurfaced on radar. The crew must recover the ship and doing so they will unlock it's darkest secrets and find out just where the ship was all those years.

5. 30 Days Of Night (2007)
30 Days Of Night is a vampire film that takes place in a remote area of Alaska during one of the harshest acts of nature on Earth, 30 days of complete darkness during a rough snow storm. The citizens of the town must survive the dark whil a group of animal-like vampires feed on anyone in sight. The sheriff (Josh Hartnett) must find a way to keep his town safe until the sun comes up.

I agree, I liked all the movies that you have mentioned. Sadly, most movies I truly enjoy get very little recognition.

Haven't seen Ravenous or May.

I believe Let the Right One In got a huge amount of praise and recognition.

I did not like May. Couldn't get past 30 minutes.

Event Horizon and 30 Days of Night are fantastic.

Added Ravenous to the Netflix queue. Haven't been able to find May streaming anywhere....legal, that is.

Yea, I don't get that one either.

To me it was the best movie coming out that year.

In the US it is pretty unknown.

Nice topic!

I have to agree with Boss, LTROI got plenty of attention when it was released. It's a brilliant film and deserves all the praise. Your opinion that it's underrated is, naturally, subjective so I can't argue one way or the other there.

Where we agree is on May and Ravenous. Those are two very intriguing movies and need to be mentioned more when people talk about modern classics. May in particular just leaves me breathless every time I watch it.

30 Days of Night and Event Horizon get exactly the amount of attention they deserve. Some. ::big grin::

LTROI is anything but under rated.Lots of well deserved praise and accolades.

Event Horizon is yet another pile of crap from the modern day Ed Wood that is Paul W.S. Anderson.Seriously, that man couldnt direct traffic.
