Immersive Horror MMORPG!

Hello everyone!

I dropped by to share my discovery with fellow horror fans. The discovery might cheer up those who were disappointed with cancellation of World of Darkness.

There is a promising MMORPG in development which draws inspiration from Lovecraft's books. Developers of the game want to create an immersive medieval dark fantasy world with role-playing mechanics and horror elements. It also looks like a very experimental MMO because they want to abandon many old MMO features and introduce a lot of new ones.

According to official information it should be ready for full launch after 2-3 years. I don't know if the company making the game will succeed or fail but I think horror fans interested in MMO game might want to keep an eye on that one. Oh, and the game is called Revival and here is a screenshot that gives an idea what the game and its graphics will look like. It will be a 3D game where players will move and see the world either in first-person or third-person perspective.

It looks interesting, but paying an extra 35 bucks for an in game hovel? Or $150 for a decent house? Sort of ruins possibilities.

Developers say that players without a home can get the same advantages as homeowners. Also, owning a house is going to be risky because a house can be damaged or destroyed if it is not insured and towns will collect real estate taxes from homeowners.

The only thing truly reserved for homeowners and no one else will be neighborhood politics. Homeowners living in a same town district will decide on things like how much in-game money they will pay for the upkeep of town guard patrols in their town district, or whether they want to spend in-game money on building some new neighborhood upgrade (like a shack where to keep their horses).

You seem to know a lot about this game, are you directly involved?

The game is early in development but there is already a LOT of information about the game on their website in blogs and forum posts made by developers.

If you have any questions to developers, there is almost 100% chance that one of the lead designers will answer them if you ask it on the game forum. The community is quite friendly and helpful too.

Here is some information that I remember about horror aspects of the game revealed by lead designers.

There will be true darkness in dungeons and outside during the night. People will need to ignite and carry a lamp or a torch to be able to see in the darkness. Turning brightness or gamma up on the monitor will not help to see through the darkness.

Horror in the game will have mostly Lovecraftian flavor. There will be great old gods like Cthulhu, Haedra and Dagon somewhere on the edge between reality and legends, and cosmic outer gods like Azathoth and Yoth-Sogoth who may cause insanity if some unfortunate person experiences their presence. Developers are promising that presence and agendas of different gods will be far from an abstract concept in the game world. There will also be secret occults and possible rituals or triggers that might unleash something on the world if conditions are right and stars are aligned in a correct way.

Potent magic will come with dangerous risks and could lead to insanity. An archeologist or arcanist who succeeds in digging deep in old ruins and lore of forgotten ages might discover a dreadful grimoire with life of its own. One day someone might even come upon an original copy of Alhazred's Necronomicon.

A transformation system might be implemented to make a few poor souls transform into something less human.

Developers have also revealed that when player characters die, they will be sent to another plane of existence. They must find a mortality gate and return back to the material plane without attracting attention of any beings or entities that exist in other planes beyond the material plane.

I take the posts below as a sounding yes.

I'm not directly involved. The company making the game is semi-indie. Revival is their own project but their other work has been for publishers and bigger companies like Obsidian Entertainment, CIG, THQ, Crytek, AMD.

Designers have released a video showing how house decoration tool works in the game. Players who own houses will get a new version of the game client including the decoration tool hopefully during the next ten days. ::confused::
