100 Greatest Horror Film VHS Covers

Came across an excellent, nostalgia-invoking blog entry by someone called Matt Mulcahey, divided into 2 parts.

Some great covers in there which bring back a lot of memories. Too bad so many of those movies don't warrant those great covers. Look at Defcon 4 for example, if that movie was only a tenth as good as the cover, it would have been worthwhile, but instead it is worthless. Some of those covers are pretty bad though and shouldn't be on the 100 greatest list. A couple of my fav covers are are The Company of Wolves and The Gates of Hell. Another great one they don't have on there is Future Kill.

Liked the 2nd (100-51) lot more.

I know it goes without saying, but being that most of these are pre-internet, all you had to judge these movies by was the covers. I can't even begin to estimate how many of these same movies I, somehow, convinced my mom to rent, just because the cover looked cool. Defcon-4 is a perfect example of that.

If I were a millionaire, I would hire some talented filmakers to take the Defcon 4 cover and make a movie which has something to do with with that image. That couldn't fail to be an awesome movie.

This era of cover art just straight up fuckin' ruled. Few goodies on that list.

All those Conan knock offs had great art. Iron Master is one of my favorites...

Pretty fond of the two Bronx Warriors sleeves too...

I love these! Never will see such artwork again---too "graphic" for little ones. I wish a vintage VHS rental store was set up with these in my neck of the wood!

A couple of my favorites:

Horrifically misleading. A film about tiny little trolls living inside the toilet - terrifying. A film about tiny little trolls where one happens to come out of a toilet in one scene...less thrilling.

Pretty good for the most part. Quite interesting how much stuff was rushed out during the VHS boom and how the format dominated the market for a much longer period of time than DVDs and Blu-ray will. DVDs are already on the way out and Blu-ray will end up being solely for the collector market.
