The Lords of Salem
 

I watched this today and I'm curious what my fellow horror fans thought about it.

I liked it ok. I'm not a huge fan of Zombie's flicks, but this is probably my favorite one since House of 1,000 Corpses, as I expected it would be.

I just got Lords Of Salem today...going to check it out this weekend.

I'm not a huge Rob Zombie fan, but I watch everything with an open mind.

I occasionally watch House Of 1000 Corpses because I love Bill Moseley and Sid's character was great. Devil's Rejects was ok but didn't have the vibe and enjoyment factor for me.

I loved Scout Taylor Compton in Halloween, and she made it enjoyable. I absolutely hated Halloween 2. It was one of the few films I actually thought about asking the theater for my money back.

If he were to ever actually make Werewolf Women Of The S.S. I would probably line up to see that one.

I posted about it in Last Seen Movie after I watched it. I do like Rob Zombie's films, mainly The Devil's Rejects. I thought this was bizarre. I think he stepped out of his box some. It channeled movies like Rosemary's Baby. It was not exactly cohesive enough for me and some parts were cheesy. I read the novel prior to though and that was obviously more detailed.

Whoa. Came back today and this was given its own thread. Pretty sure I posted in an already-existing thread on this movie.

No problem, if a mod moved it (which I am assuming is what happened, unless someone dosed me with a Lords record without me knowing it).

I was telling a friend of mine about it last night and, I feel, if the movie was foreign (specifically Italian), then people would be nutting all over themselves about it. But since it is an American film in English, a lot of people seem to think it's garbage.

To put a finer point on it, if this was an Argento film it would be hailed as the return of the Master.

In my opinion, Zombie could almost be compared to Tarantino, in that a lot of times he seems to "make movies about movies". The largest influences here (imo) being Argento, Jodorowsky, and Ken Russell.

Certainly, there were moments that I groaned aloud, but overall, at least he did something new, and I will always applaud someone stepping out of their comfort zone and not just continuing to jump on the remake train.

First horror flick I've watched in months and I dug it. A few flaws but all up this one was solid.

I think he does the "homage" thing with a lot more class than Tarantino. Tarantino is more heavy handed and a lot of his films come across as some hyperactive kid's clip tape of films of a certain genre/era. Zombie uses the influences more subtlety tastefully melding the past and present with out being too overblown.

Yeah I definitely got the Rosemary's Baby vibe along with the Jodorowsky and Ken Russell influences knife_fight mentioned. It did kinda fall apart somewhat towards the end for me and got a bit messy but I did like the more surreal elements of the film unlike Halloween II where they felt out of place. Apart from the goofy radio station ad I felt the film was more mature stylistically and showed he's grown more as a director. It had a really brooding atmosphere and was less cartoonish than his other work.

Great to see Meg Foster back on the screen.

All of his flicks have grown on me the more times I watch them (I'm a big fan... no shame) so I'll definitely be checking it out again.

I personally thought it was way better than the Evil Dead remake. Of course, that's just my personal taste coming out, and possibly an innate prejudice against remakes, no matter how good.

Definitely some flaws, though.

The vegetable tentacle baby was stupid. I also did not care for the midget Oogie Boogie man.

Yeah I felt the same way about those.

I found it disappointing. As I said in LSM thread....it's by far the most frustrating flick from RZ, IMO. Though it's got a good cast, budget & some decent set designs and even the story actually got a bit of potential to show some bloody-bizarro twists & turns but disappointingly it turned out quite flat with uninteresting characters & very low on gore & body count, though it's not something that must required for a story like this one but just saying as I think, it was pretty unusual for a Rob Zombie movie. There were some creepy & atmospheric set pieces but every time the final outcome wasn't so satisfactory or felt something missing. Overall, a missed opportunity for Mr. Zombie to make something close to or give a nod to the classics like Rosemary's Baby as well as Argento's 3 mothers' saga.

Moreover, besides only impregnating Heidi with Satan's seed or Satan himself whatever, I think it'd be better to add some other tasks like twisted bloody murders, freak accidents or bizarre activity (like Inferno & Suspiria) as some additional/required human sacrifices done or orchestrated by the 'Lords of Salem' before the final show. **Spoilers End**

The lack of gore/mayhem didn't really bother me I like how he showed restraint. I just thought the finale was just a bit too flat.
