90s Horror movies

How did horror movies change from the 80s to the 90s, what was different about them? Do you think they got better or worse?

To a certain extent the 90s saw horror films take themselves a bit more seriously a lot of the time passing themselves off as "thrillers" (the major studio output anyway). This was mainly a result of The Silence Of The Lambs' success. The early 90s saw the tail end of the 80s styled trashy OTT flicks but a lot more comical i.e Child's Play, Freddy's Dead and The People Under The Stairs. Better or worse I don't know... both decades have their gems and utter shit. I love films from both eras.
