The best and worst years of horror

I was checking out IMDB, researching horror movies by year, when I started to question "What has been the absolute best or worst year for horror movies?"

I started at 1920, and disregarded years that didn't have a significant amount of movies released to qualify (although I could understand the point that a year without horror = the worst) Here's what I've found so far:

There are a lot of really good years, but 1968 and 1978 look to be hard to beat. They both have lots of iconic releases that changed the horror genre, plus plenty of hidden gems.

1968
Rosemary's Baby
Night of the Living Dead
Witchfinder General
The Devil Rides Out
Black Cat From the Grove
Spider Baby

1978
Halloween
Dawn of the Dead
I Spit On Your Grave
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Magic

Right now, 1991 is looking like one of the worst. The line up includes mostly sequels and crap, including:

1991
Freddy's Dead
Child's Play 3
Critters 3
Evil Toons

The only real redemption I could find is People Under the Stairs, which although I enjoy, some might not consider much of an argument.

So what are your thoughts? Got any nominees for the best/worst years in horror? What criteria would you judge it on?

I did a project where I had to pick the best horror movie from each year 1975-present, and discovered I had to leave 1993 blank, so I guess that would be the worst year for me.

These were my picks for the best horror movie of each year 1975-present (really, really hard to pick just one in a lot of cases):

1975 - Jaws
1976 - The Omen
1977 - Suspiria
1978 - Halloween
1979 - Alien
1980 - The Shining
1981 - Evil Dead
1982 - The Thing
1983 - Of Unknown Origin (not a very good year)
1984 - Nightmare On Elm Street
1985 - Phenomena
1986 - Aliens
1987 - Evil Dead 2, Dead By Dawn
1988 - The Vanishing
1989 - Society
1990 - Misery
1991 - Silence Of The Lambs
1992 - Dead Alive (pretty bad year too)
1993 - nope
1994 - Mute Witness
1995 - Seven
1996 - Scream
1997 - The Relic
1998 - Whispering Corridors
1999 - The Blair Witch Project
2000 - Battle Royale
2001 - The Devil's Backbone
2002 - Signs
2003 - Identity
2004 - Saw
2005 - The Descent
2006 - The Host
2007 - The Mist
2008 - Let The Right One In
2009 - Drag Me To Hell

Army of Darkness... but that's about it. 1993 does look like it's a particularly bad year for horror.

1932 is indeed a good year, producing Vampyr, Freaks, White Zombie. The Mummy, The Mask of Fu Manchu, The Old Dark House and Murders in the Rue Morgue.
