Question about the movie "Saw"

I'm not a big fan of the Saw movie franchise but I caught some of the ending of the original "Saw" and have a question. In the finale, Cary Elwes uses his shirt as a tourniquet so he can saw off his ankle and reach the cellphone, which is just out of his reach. This seems rather draconian. Question: Why doesn't he use his shirt and maybe saw off his slacks and use them to flip atop the phone and drag it within reach? I wasn't paying too much attention to the plot -- was this just a stupid plot error or was there some story-line reason that he couldn't use his clothes to snag the phone? Like if he did that, his gramma would be fried for supper or something?

He needed to saw off his foot anyway to escape the prison he was in. You're going to have a LONG task ahead of you if you start picking tiny (and not so tiny) plot holes out of the Saw franchise.;)

Besides, I'm sure the phone was dead, or wouldn't work... and how's he going to explain where he is anyway? He cut his foot off because it made for better cinema. :)

Y'all pretty much explained it. No real reason except for gory effect. Maybe the phone was dead but how did he know it ahead of time? And how did cutting off his foot release him from the cell anyway?

I suppose that I'm not "saw franchise" material, eh?

Nothing wrong with that, imo.;)
