So I saw the movie The Runaways the other day...

...And say what you will about Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, but they put up AMAZING performances as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. Incredibly well-done, this movie is a fantastic bio-pic and haunting look into the short-lived career and stolen childhoods of The Runaways. It's a fantastic character piece and and definitely an engaging film. Michael Shannon, who plays Producer Kim Fowley, does so with the right amount of sleaze and art.

My only complaint about the movie was that it was too short - I wanted more...

So I went ahead and checked out...

What an amazing documentary. Directed by Victory Tischler-Blue, bassist #2 for the band after Jackie Fox quit, Edgeplay is an incredibly well-done and honest film told through depicted through interviews with Vickie Blue, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, Kari Krome, Sandy West, and Kim Fowley. Interesting, sad, disturbing, and ultimately engaging look into the lives of teenage girls who were taken advantage of by their Production Company. It's too bad that Joan Jett was not a part of the film - My only complaint with this one is that, again, I wish that it was longer.

Both movies are HIGHLY recommended if you like The Runaways or if you're interested in good, solid music bio-pics or documentaries. Don't let the presence of teenie-boppers Stewart and Fanning fool you - They did an amazing job.

True. Would have liked more on Lita and also Sandy, too... It's hard trying to put it all into an hour and a half, though... You have ti pick and choose who to focus on.

Have you seen the documentary? Lita contributes quite a bit to it. You should check it out.

Fuck I loved this flick. Watched it a couple of times now. Michael Shannon was dope.

I had a mad crush on her since I was 5 haha.

I was a bit disappointed with it. It felt shallow and cliched, despite being a true story and having some great performances. Still, highly recommended for Stewart, Fanning, and Shannon.

I hear where you're coming from dude. I was expecting usual biopic cliches and embellishments of the truth & got them. I just dug it as a story of girls and their guitars. Looking forward to checking out the doco mentioned earlier in the thread.

I like the Runaways but my main interest in seeing the film & the documentary are for Kim Fowley. I'm a long time fan of this lunatic, and I'm interested to see how he is portrayed by an actor, and to see actual footage of him.

I'm usually disappointed at actor's portrayals of people that we have real documents of. Jim Carey's portrayal of Andy Kaufman? Superficial. Gary Oldman as Sid Vicious? He did as well as anyone could, but if you've seen real footage of Sid & Nancy, it just doesn't come off.

Anyway- looking forward to seeing these.

When I saw the biopic, I thought that Michael Shannon was ridiculously sleazy, but had no frame of reference in terms of the real Kim Fowley... I assume that he was playing up the sleaze and the creep... And then I watched the actual interview with Fowley in Edgeplay... And Shannon was dead-on. What a creepy individual.

I honestly think that you'll dig both pics. Right now, The Runaways is on Comcast... It's not free, but I honestly think it's worth it. I've been tempted to rent it again, to tell you the truth.
