A Different Hatter
 

Here's a different idea to The Mad Hatter. In this The Mad Hatter is a drug as seen in this little teaser(look for the top hat on the pill). http://vimeo.com/8109235 and throughout the feature film you'll see visions/hallucinations of the Mad Hatter character which is basically a personification of the drug.

As an independent film I think this looks good, however; and this might just be because I haven't seen much of it, it seems you're just using The Mad Hatter as a way to advertise your film. It doesn't seem to have much place in the story.
