Who killed horror
 

CGI looks fantastic, but do you think it has taken away from the inventivness of the horror genre. i.e its a crap story but hey we will just add some mad CGI and the kids will love it!
Has there been a great CGI horror yet?
Remember when horror effects where lovingly crafted in workshops by speacial effects departments who put the heart and soul into it, is CGI Souless?

CGI is part of the future of horror. When they learn to use it wisely and aquire new techniques, it'll work like a charm.

People complain on how it takes away from the story but when I see a practical effect that looks fake it takes me away from the story because my mind is on the effect and how fake it looked. Cgi can only take away the story if it looks fake imo.

Yeah dont get me wrong I have nothing against CGI like I said it can look realy impressive im just wondering if makes directers,screen writers etc lazy!
So far only LOTR (I know its not horror), has seemed to have got the blend of live action to CGI right, but that script was based on an existing classic book!

Exactly, even though i love the old fashion techniques like American Werewolf in London used and Alien and Aliens but in some films cgi is necessary and great (Lord of the Rings) but if cgi is used badly it could ruin a horror films (alot of gore in JX was using bad cgi and Alien 3 dog alien looked quite badly done with cgi).

Come to think of it, I would say horror is dead more like its revived, lots of new horror films have come out this year and last year, which are not too bad, some rather good.

That is exactly what I thought of when I saw the title of this post.

I didn't mind Scream (just the 1st one though), but you're right, the whole subgenre of popculture/horror/comedy got played out very quick. In my opinion there has barely been any good horror post-Scream. The only ones that jump to mind are Jeepers Creepers 1, Wrong Turn, 28 Days Later, Fvs.J, and the Dawn of the Dead remake. On the other hand, I can't even begin to count the number of shitty horror movies that's come out since then, so I'm not even going to try.

As for CGI, I am not a fan of it. I would much rather see some cheesy special effects than some cheesy CGI. Cheesy makeup and gore in a cheesy horror movie can make that movie very entertaining. On the other hand, cheesy CGI in a cheesy movie, just makes that movie suck. Period.

If the CGI is done well enough that I don't notice it, then I don't have any problem with it, but when you see something that looks like you could have made it on your computer, that's just lame. (See a movie called 'Infested' if you want to see the bottom of the CGI barrell.)
