Lady Gaga and Silent Hill

So Lady Gaga definitely is not the type of music that I listen to, but I am absolutely fascinated by her aesthetic. I just watched the music video for "Bad Romance" (it helps if you watch it on mute) and it seems CLEARLY influenced by Silent Hill. Thought I would post my theory and see your thoughts.

NOTE: This thread is about the aesthetic and not the music; this music is just not my bag, but I really like her music videos.

When I googled "Lady Gaga Silent Hill," I got this link. An interesting comparison, but I think the outfits in "Bad Romance" are more accurate a comparison to the nurses.

Damn, I never would have taken a look at this video if you hadn't of said something either haha. Interesting aesthetics she has going on there and totally Silent Hill-ish. The gagarharharha bs makes me think of Self Esteem though.

Glad you checked it out and liked it.

Yeah, I absolutely LOVE the video - The costumes seriously remind me of the Silent Hill nurses (which I really don't think can possibly be a coincidence)... Not to mention, there's a hairless cat in it for 2 seconds. Quality. Love the end of the video, too. Completely twisted. I REALLY wish the music was more industrial, like NIN or something.

I shared this one with Miss Macabre - The song "Paparazzi" has this whole dance scene with crutches and prosthetics that's absolutely twisted. Say what you will about Lady Gaga, but her aesthetic is delightfully macabre.

Not to mention, "Paparazzi" features Eric from True Blood, so there's another selling point...

My girlfriend has the second Gaga album. It's actually not bad. Teeth is a great song, Monster is pretty solid too.

Really? I'll have to check it out. I absolutely love her aesthetic... The music just doesn't really appeal to me...

A lot of it is pretty shallow, but the second album has more taboo eroticism than the first and fewer senseless songs. See if you can find Teeth. It is dropdead sexy.

^Wonderful insight.

I have to admit, I feel the same way. I feel like she has this kind of detachment from the whole corporate pop scene, participating in it by understanding its formula; it has to do with her aesthetic, too. Kind of like she's looking at the scene, removed, manipulating it a bit, and laughing at everyone. I could be totally off with this, but if that's her angle, I can appreciate that. I hope she has a master plan.

I wish I could see the artistry and inventivness you speak of, but regretfully, all I see is another half naked girl shaking her tits at the camera.

and, somehow, selling it as cutting edge, avant garde "art".

In 10 years people who have bought her music will be hiding it in shame.
