Richard Pryor: Is it Something I Said

Writer-director Bill Condon and producers Adam Sandler and Chris Rock may have finally found their Richard Pryor.

According to both HitFix and Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider blog, Marlon Wayans is nearing a deal to play the late comedy icon in Sony's biopic Richard Pryor: Is it Something I Said.

A string of comic actors have been attached to play Pryor in one biopic or another over the years, including Marlon's own big brother Damon Wayans. Eddie Murphy, who snagged an Oscar nom for Condon's Dreamgirls, had most recently been attached to play Pryor in Is it Something I Said. EW claims Murphy dropped out over a conflict with Paramount, who had previously been involved with the project.

Citing insiders, EW claims "Wayans fought for the role, blowing the producers away with a 13-min screen test where he 'transforms into Pryor.' The movie depicts Pryor's controversial brand of comedy and his battle with drugs and is currently budgeted at $20 million."

Although perhaps best known for comedies such as White Chicks and Scary Movies, Wayans has also appeared in the likes of Requiem for a Dream and The Ladykillers. He's also starred in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and Dungeons & Dragons.

At his prime, Pryor was a consumate actor. Watching his early comedy concerts is like attending a seminar on acting- in fact, a theatrical company I worked with did just this. We'd watch his videotapes and annalyze them. He really knew what he was doing.

Damon Wayans playing him will be about the same and Carrey playing Andy Kaufman- an empty eggshell of a performance.

Marlon...not Damon. But I can't see him pulling it off either. There's was a lot of drama in Pryor's life.

Maybe Jamie Fox....he's pulled off some good dramatic roles.

It's Marlon, the really skinny one.

My argument's the same. It's very difficult to pull off someone portraying an iconic personality like this in this day and age- we have the real thing available on dvd to compare them too, and the imitations just come off as pale and phony.

I agree with neverending on this one. I still haven't been able to bring myself to watch Ring Of Fire so I don't see myself lining up to see this anytime soon.

People would be better off checking out Jo Jo Dancer Your Life Is Calling.

Marlon Wayans tries entirely too hard to be funny and always falls flat.

I hate biopics. Or at least those based on actors, musicians, etc. Bird was good.

Maybe a good movie on Fatty Arbuckle is due.
