Controversy Discussion: An Issue About Roommates

Hey all.
As I was reading the paper this morning I stumbled across a heated debate in the advice columns about an issue I've been hearing more and more about in the last few years. A mother had written in and was concerned about her son; he was going to college, living in the dorms and had gotten assigned a gay roommate. The mother was upset because she felt this was equivilent to a boy and a girl rooming together, but the advice column journalist had strongly disagreed, feeling the mother's worry was nothing but prejudice, similar to feeling discomfort about a kid rooming with a person of a different race.

In this case, the son asked for and was assigned a new roommate.

I thought it was an interesting topic and was curious to see where you guys stood.

I had a gay roommate for a while but she was a girl, not a guy and we were sharing a house, not a room.

Errrm. That's just silly. Even if it 'was' like a boy and a girl rooming together, is his mother naive enough to think her son wouldn't be bringing home girls every night in a drnken stupor?

Yes but, to play the devil's advocate, isn't there a colossal difference between taking someone home whom you've met and established a mutual sexual attraction with and living with a complete stranger who is attracted to your sex? There are no unisex dormitories in the United States.

This reminds me of the urban legend about the college kid who went to the doctor because his ass was sore. His dorm roommate had been chloraphorming(sp?) him and giving him butt sex.

Unless the momma had that "feeling" about her son's sexual preference ...I say it is akin to prejudice.
We live in a society of many versions, get the fuck over it unless you're perfect...and I don't mean THINK you're perfect.

This is a load of shit fueled by homophobia. That woman is a bigot plain and simple.

It is quite possible to live with someone and not try shit on to get into their pants. She's making out like all homosexual people are sex crazed rapists.

...and as far as the unisex dorm thing goes its not a issue of that. Just because he's gay it doesn't make him a woman does it?

No, not at all, but then another question poses itself- why aren't boys allowed to room with girls? Does it have anything to do with gender organization or are they avoiding grouping possible sexual distractions/problems/etc? If it's the latter, how is this different?

(Again, purely devil's advocate)
