Fantastic Four to be rebooted?

Less than two years after the release of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, 20th Century Fox is reportedly looking to reboot their Fantastic Four franchise.

It was reported last fall that Fox chairman Tom Rothman was considering a reboot of Daredevil, and now IESB claims the studio is "looking to completely retool, recast and recrew the franchise."

The site points out that, obviously, this would mean no Ioan Gruffudd as Mr. Fantasic, no Jessica Alba as the Invisible Woman, no Chris Evans as Human Torch, no Michael Chiklis as The Thing, no Julian McMahon as Doctor Doom, and no director Tim Story.

IESB says Fox wants the new FF franchise "to be 'less bubble gum' this time round following the Iron Man template, which was a complete success in reviews and box office take but a bit darker when it came to its superhero."

i'll admit that i've found both ff movies a bit light and bubble-gum-like. i always thought the THING should be cg and bigger. i also think the guy playing reed is a bit of a doofus

They aren't masterpieces by any means, but I find the FF movies pretty damn fun for what they are: mindless fluff. I've read quite a few of the original FF comics, and the movies really capture that kind of feeling...just high-octane, innocent fun.

I'll defend the series anyday...

Fox Rebooting F.F.

Variety reports that 20th Century Fox has begun overhauling the "Fantastic Four" movie franchise to take the Marvel property beyond the two films already made.

Akiva Goldsman has been hired to oversee the reboot as producer. Michael Green, the co-exec producer of TV's "Heroes" who co-wrote Green Lantern, will write the script for the new Fantastic Four film.

The 2005 Fantastic Four and 2007 sequel "Rise of the Silver Surfer" were directed by Tim Story and starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis. Since the deals for the reboot are just getting made, it is unclear if any of them will return.

Fox controls the "Fantastic Four" movie franchise in perpetuity -- as long as it continues making the films. Marvel is a producer and financial participant through a licensing agreement.

Good. Those movies mangled Lee and Kirby's vision.

They both sucked, but do we need a reboot now? They still made money, didn't they? I mean, the Hulk reboot came fairly quickly, but the first was a real stinker.

They have to make it and release it soon, within the next 2-3 years, or they lose the rights.

Disney has bought Marvel for $4 billion earlier last weekend.

Thats right, X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Marvel Zombies, et al all belong to Disney now.
