Taxi Driver

This is easily one of the top five movies ever made and probably Scosese's and DeNiro's best work. Also one of the greatest shoot-out ever at the end, anyone else enjoy this movie?

I'm going to ignore the fact that it obviously isn't a horror movie because it's the best movie ever made. Well done.

I like this movie but I have always had one problem with it. De Niro's character seems to be disgusted with the world and all of it's sleaziness, and yet he takes Cybil Shepherd's character to a porn movie on their first date. This is certainly something that a guy who is hung up on morality issues WOULD NOT be likely to do. Aside from that bit of inconsistency, it is a good movie. Lots of blood. Jodie Foster was really good in this. Is was a difficult role for someone as young as herself, at the time, to portray. But she pulled it off well. Harvey Kitel as a pimp was funny as fuck. I also really liked him in Bad Lieutenant.

No offence, but you obviously missed a HUGE part of the point of the movie.

OK, what did I miss?

PS I see somebody is lurking the forums in invisible mode tonight. ;)

If I'da known I could've done it before, I would've been doing it the whole time.

You missed the fact that Travis Bickle is obviously insane. They show throughout the movie that he's way out of touch with reality.

Well yeah, I figured that. But he seemed like the obsessive compulsive type. He was obsessed with making his enviorment "clean." That is what made him insane, so it makes absolutely no sense for him to go to a porn movie. Its out of character. IMO

Sam The Egg 03-09-2004 07:11 PM

It's a nuance. It supports the fact that he's out of touch. He talks about the scum around him, but goes to porno movies. Although he obviously doesn't go to them for the reasons one might go to a porno. It's like he's going to see any old movie. If he was all aroused by them, you'd have a point.

Well, I viewed the porno thing as a trace of normalcy, rather than a sign of being out of touch. To me, it was like a break from his usual obsession. Like, as if he still had a little bit of "typical male behavior" in him. So, in that sense, it kinda works. But as far as that part further proving his insanity, I fail to "get it."

Sam The Egg 03-09-2004 07:35 PM

Well, one would think the fact that he took Betsy to it and then honestly couldn't understand why she was mad would've helped show it. Also, the way he gets candy and soda beforehand.
