Sega Saturn

Does anyone in here own one? If yes, does it still work now?

I am curious because I read Manchestr's reply in another thread, and it reminded me that back then, it was touted as a better console than the Playstation in its time. It had internal memory to store saved games, right? But it got easier to make games for the PS, and so PS went on and won the console war.

I havent seen one (apart from pics on the Net), and wonder how it performed, when compared to the PS.

And what games came out for it? (Obviously Sonic was one...)

My friend had one, it was a fine machine which seem to process hand animated graphics very well. It didn't have as much 3D acceleration guts as the PS which was a lack of vision from SEGA that perhaps cost them the battle. Like most consoles particulary of those earlier generatations it wasn't necessarily better or worse than a PS as far as the end user is concerned, the PS just scored better overll titles.

Knights, Gunstar Heroes, Virtual On and SF2 Alpha were all presented wonderfully on the Saturn and are the games I remember most fondly of that generation.

The Dreamcast... well that's an even sadder story... that was a gem of a machine. Oh well.

I actually still have 2 Sega Saturns.
One works perfectly, the other has an issue with the CD ROM, so it is unreliable reading discs (although will read them a percentage of the time).

I got it instead of the PS1 at the time, I think mainly because PS1's were out of stock. I enjoyed a few of the games on it. Road Rash, Sega Rally Championship, and Street Fighter Alpha are some of the games I remember fondly. I also had the first Need for Speed on the Saturn (as well as the PC at the time).

I haven't gotten my Saturns out for a very long time, and can't really remember all the games I have for it. But this thread has me thinking that they will be coming out of storage in the near future :)

Always wanted to play a game "virtual hylide"? which I thought looked really cool.
Also, having FIGHTING VIPERS at home would've been kick-ass.
Wanna maybe try and get some emulation happening for this one.

I have one that works great, I just replaced the battery for the internal memory so the saves work again too. A few games I still pop in and play are Fighting Vipers, Three Dirty Dwarves, Dragon Force, Shining Force 3, and Guardian Heroes. It's a lot of fun but the engine wasn't as good for true 3D games so I can see why PS beat it. Lots of great games for the hardcore though. Working Designs and Treasure FTW

Guardian Heroes! That's the one... I thought it was Gunstar...

A real gem that one I thought.

And I also read that the graphics looked much better on the Saturn than on the PS.

Was the PS more universally acceptable? Or did game developers have problems developing games for the Saturn and preferred the PS?

Cost-effectiveness?

We might never know. But the Saturn comes off as a real kickass console, the more I hear and read about it.

The graphics in full 3d games were sub-par compared to most PS games. Side scrollers, fighters, and 2d games were where the Saturn shined. The Saturn pushed out 200,000 Polygons/Sec while the Playstation boasted 360,000.

Gunstar Heroes was a cool game too, it was released on the Genesis.

Hey...anyone know anything about saturn emulation?
I've got a .bin file for die hard arcade and have tried a couple of emulators without much luck.
Suggestions on a good emu?

Haven't found one myself, last Sega platform I emulated was Sega CD so I could play Dark Wizard again without having to track the system down.
