Let The Right One In

So I searched the sit and didn't find a thread about this movie yet.

I had been trying to watch it for about 3 weeks and I never got the chance. Yesterday I decided to take a break from studying for exams and watch it.

I was nothing but impressed. I loved the dreary atmosphere, and the setting really helped to set that up. There's nothing like winter to make me depressed. The characterization was so well done and it's such a great story.

One of the things I liked the most was that they didn't try to shock or scare the audience too much. Through out the film they basically told you what was going to happen and everything was really obvious but I think that worked to their advantage. This was a stark contrast to most modern movies where they just want to make the audience jump, instead of feel.

Another thing I really liked was the role reversal. Generally in a vampire movie the male is the vampire, and the woman the human. Just like in life men generally make the moves and are the stronger of the two, while the woman follows along, or needs saving in some way. The gender role switch here was really refreshing.

So what did you guys think?

I loved the film and thought the violence and blood was so tremendously effective because you have to wait for it. The characters are fully established before anything gets gory.

The spare, minimalist setting of the apartment complex adds to the dour tone and the age of the children is everything to this tale. They are at the cusp of puberty. Lost somewhere between innocence and experience which is where the supernatural lives and breathes. And the performances are fantastic. A fantastic film about a vampire and a youngster that doesn't involve baseball or high school.

That's so well put. I was thinking the whole time about how even though they were twelve they were in a very adult relationship. Always looking out for each other and being respectful. A lot of parts left me thinking that they were more mature sexually than most adults, but those situations were really because they were too young to know any different.

I've been waiting so long to see this.
It'll finally be near me on the 12th of this month.

Can't wait.

Yeah, that is exactly what I thought. Especially when the old man says "Do me a favour and don't see that boy tonight." and he looked so sad. It actually irked me a little when she touched his face and gave him a look that I took as "You knew this would happen eventually."

I need to see this movie...doesn't look like it'll be playing near me though, and I'd rather not watch it online if I can help it.

Fingers crossed!
