Bioshock the movie

Aug 4, 2008

Gore Verbinski has landed a three-year first-look deal at Universal Pictures, where he’s developing a bigscreen adaptation of the hit videogame "Bioshock."

Helmer, who directed the three pics in Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer’s "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, will focus his efforts on the vidgame pic before moving on to other projects through his now U-based Blind Wink Prods. shingle.

Based on the Take-Two title, the script by John Logan ("The Aviator," "Gladiator") revolves around the mysterious events that transpire in an underwater utopia known as Rapture.

"I look forward to taking my own productivity up a notch both as a producer and director," Verbinski said.

Take-Two is developing a "Bioshock" sequel that will be released in 2009, likely before the film hits theaters.

In addition to the "Pirates" pics, Verbinski’s credits include "The Weather Man," "The Mexican," "The Ring" and "Mouse Hunt."

I've never played the game, but based on what I know about it he seems like an odd choice...

I don't think it's an odd choice at all. He's very creative and I would like to see him do something a little darker like BioShock. The game was amazing and I can't wait to see Big Daddy. My only worry would be that it looks too cartoony.

In the words of Trey Parker:

FUCK YEAH!

that is so sweet, he is a great director, even the weatherman was watchable (albeit, sucky)

I am not so sure about how I feel about this. Gladiator is possibly one of the most insipid movies that I have ever seen (and it's the script that pisses me off).

And Gore Verbinski hasn't really won me over... Pirates I was boring... Pirates II was actually pretty damn good... Pirates III totally sucked. Haven't seen Weatherman (which looked fucking awful), or The Mexican (which I heard was pretty disappointing)... But the American version of The Ring is absolute tripe.

...

BUT EVEN SO... I would forgive Gore Verbinski (he has his moments)... But John Logan?! He writes crappy scripts for larger-than-life SENSATIONAL EPICS (Last Samuri included!).

Usually I ignore these kinds of threads if I'm unimpressed with the proposed production company, but I love Bioshock so much that I'd hate for it to be ruined on the big screen. I do NOT want a retarded wide-eyed epic film to ruin this dark undersea dystopia. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time.

Now I'm trying to think, if I could pick a writer and director for Bioshock... Who would they be...?

Johnathan and Christopher Nolan, perhaps? :)

Yes. I'd see it then. I've never played the game, so that would sway me to seeing the film.

I was honestly thinking that...

Though I envision it to be similar to Blade Runner, so I can't help but want Ridley Scott and Phillip K. Dick on hand... But only if they promised to make it extra dark. Not to mention, Bioshock is inherently creepy and Scott obviously has experience with horror. I seriously want this film to retain its horror undercurrent.

Maybe Dan O'Bannon as a writer, since he wrote all of the Alien movies.

Oh, see, it combines two of my favorite things: Post apocalypse dystopia and eugenics. I'd want to see it even if I hadn't played the game.

although you didnt like the ring, (i do) you have to give verbinski credit, the ring was moody and atmospheric beginning to end. I also liked Gladiator, but that movie aside, The Aviator was a great movie. Neither person listed has a spotless record, but there is potential.

I have to admit, I think Christopher and Jonathan Nolan are supremely talented, but Memento was a bit of a dud.

Oh, and Dan O'Bannon only wrote Alien, He is listed for every movie though because his characters persist throughout the series (okay, Ripley)

I'm not sure how I fell about this. The game was amazing and I just dont want the name Bioshock to be taited with a crappy movie like they did with Doom. But I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
