Christian Bale arrested on assault charges!

July 22, 2008

LONDON — Batman star Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday on allegations of assault, police said.

British media had reported that Bale's mother and sister complained they were assaulted by the 34-year-old actor at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of "The Dark Knight."

The women made the allegation at a local police station in Southern England on Monday, Britain's Press Association news agency said. It said the allegation was then passed on to the Metropolitan Police in London.

Asked whether Bale had been questioned, a police spokeswoman did not refer to him by name but said: "A 34-year-old man attended a Central London police station this morning by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault."

The spokeswoman spoke anonymously in line with police policy and refused to go into more detail. British police do not name suspects before they are formally charged.

U.S.-based representatives for Bale didn't immediately return messages seeking comment. Phone calls to Bale's London representative went unanswered.

The Sun newspaper said police didn't question the actor Monday because they didn't want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.

Wales-born Bale first made a splash as the child star of Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun" in 1987. His screen credits also include "American Psycho," "The Machinist" and "Batman Begins."

In "The Dark Knight," Bale reprises the role of wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego Batman, a brooding vigilante superhero still scarred by the murder of his parents.

The film, which stars the late Heath Ledger as Batman's nemesis The Joker, took in a record $158.3 million at the box office in its opening weekend in the U.S. last week.

When contacted, Warner reps in London said they were making no comment at this stage.

Well, next I'm betting that Aaron Eckhart is going to be caught with a prostitute, Gary Oldman's secret life as a crack dealer is going to come to light, and Chris Nolan will be hit by a bus.

This movie is dangerous to be involved in...

Hmm...looks like it isnt a rumor/gossip. Too bad...:(

It might not be, but this seems like a stunt pulled to get people taling about TDK even more. All the internet hype, Heath Ledger dead and now the star of it has been arrested, which will have people conversing about it which will inevitably have them talking about the movie. Same as the Lindsey Lohan thing not that long ago.

That's unfortunate. The details are vague so I'd like to think maybe it's being blown out of proportion...at least I hope because I always really liked him :(

A guy was talking about this on one of the Dark Knight groups on Facebook...I dont know too much myself, but supposedly England has a different definition of assault. Here's how he put it:

Quote:

In England, assault can mean simply scaring the hell out of someone and making them fear an unlawful act. That could be as simple as raising a fist or yelling a lot so even if he didn't touch them and just walked off, it can still be considered assault. And in England, it's policy to arrest a suspect before questioning them. Let's just wait and see what Bale has to say before jumping to conclusions.
Vaguely reassuring...
