Comic anti-hero "Hex" comes to big screen

Warner Bros. Pictures is saddling up to bring DC Comics' Western anti-hero comic book "Jonah Hex" to the big screen, with the writer/directors of the thriller "Crank," on board to adapt.

Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood.

"Hex" first appeared in the early 1970s in the issues of "All-Star Western" before graduating to his own series in 1977 that ran for about 10 years. A new series was launched in 2005. The character also had a run in the 1990s that combined the Western genre with supernatural elements.

It will be developed by "Crank" filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who are not making a straight-ahead Western but plan to develop the character with some of the supernatural overtones in the hopes of creating a franchise.

A photo has appeared online that purportedly shows former Punisher star Thomas Jane as the title character in Jonah Hex, a feature film based on the DC Comics western-supernatural title.

The picture posted by Film School Rejects shows Jane, sporting a dark cowboy hat and a raised six-gun with scar make-up on the right side of his face. He certainly looks the part, but the site could not verify the legitimacy of the photo.

Could it be an elaborate fake? Possibly, but it sure looks real. IGN has inquiries out to Jane's reps at William Morris to confirm whether he's been cast as Jonah Hex, which itself would be news. A photo of him in character would be icing on the cake if true.

Jonah Hex will be brought to cinematic life by Crank filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman (Batman & Robin, The Da Vinci Code) is producing along with Andrew Lazar's Mad Chance Prods. for Warner Bros.

Although a Western gunfighter-bounty hunter, the comic book adventures of Jonah Hex were infused with supernatural elements. He is a former Confederate officer whose face was horrifically scarred. Hex was introduced in the 1970s, and has had a few comic book series since then.

Mark Neveldine - director of the upcoming Jonah Hex flick said the image was a fake... but pretty cool

The movie is still in the scripting stage, there have been no moves on casting yet.

Must say Thomas Jane looks the part. And he can quite possibly pull it off too.

Maybe fans are getting a casting option across to the makers. :cool:

I thought the picture looked pretty sweet and it seems he has the look and I think he is a good actor so maybe they should offer him the part.

Hollywood Elsewhere reports that Josh Brolin, who can be seen in next week's W., has signed on to star in Warner Bros. Pictures' Jonah Hex. This has yet to be confirmed by the studio, so stay tuned.

good casting ..

i almost forgot about this comic until I found a bunch mixed in with a box of old used comics i bought at a flea market.


didnt the character get carried into the future as well ?

I love brolin. I couldn't even tell it was him from the W. trailers, because he such as damn good actor.

After the departures last year of Crank helmers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, Jonah Hex now has a new director. Jimmy Hayward, whose previous film was DreamWorks animation Horton Hears a Who!, will make his live-action debut directing the DC Comics adaptation.

Neveldine and Taylor left the project in November due to creative differences, with studio Warner Bros. acting fast to secure a replacement.

Haywood worked in the animation department on the likes of Toy Story, A Bug's Life and Monsters Inc., before making his directing debut with Horton. It is unclear if he will make any changes to Neveldine and Taylor's script.

Josh Brolin is still signed on to play the titular lead character - a facially disfigured bounty hunter and gunslinger who wears a confederate army uniform and whose adventures always end in bloody battles.

The trade mag says production on the film will begin this spring.
