Are Horror Movies Misogynistic Towards Women?

Hi there

i'm an A2 Meida studies student who as part of my course is researching the representation of women (my question is the title). As part of my research i need peoples views and thoughts on my question, so if you have any views or opinions on this question then either comment back on here or comment on my blog: http://kilika-a2mediastudiescritical....blogspot.com/

'Horror Film' is a broad genre and you can't make a generalisation saying that all horror films are this or all horror films are that...

Certainly some of the Sub-genres could be said to appear have a Misogynistic toward Women - in particular the Slasher film. I presume you mean that its the film makers who convey this 'hatred for women'. My personal opinion in this, as I've not researched it to provide quotes, but I'd imagine that their attitute is exploitative rather misogynistic.

They're cathering to a market and followign a forumula to make money for the most part. Films like Maniac or Don't go in the house certainly have misogynistic characters but Its hard to say that the film its self has an anti-female message..

I do like this Argento quote though:

'I like women, especially beautiful ones. If they have a good face and figure, I would much prefer to watch them being murdered than an ugly girl or man. I certainly don't have to justify myself to anyone about this.'

It would be very difficult for anything to be misogynistic toward anything but women.
