The Pit and the Pendulum

Does anyone have any opinions on Stuart Gordon's The Pit and the Pendulum? I just watched it for the first time last night and it was one of Full Moon's better pictures. If the production values would have been a little bit higher, I think this one could have been a real classic. Lance Henriksen's performance was one of his best.

I like this movie a lot, but I'm a sucker for the Burn The Witch genre, everything from The Conqueror Worm to Mark Of The Devil. Plus I like gratuitous nudity, and Stuie usually supplies the goods (the strip-search in Pit is a classic). I also thought Oliver Reed was cool, sort of reprising his role from Ken Russell's The Devils.

And speaking of pointless, gratuitous nudity, what about that scene in The Dead Pit where the girl is chained up and then hosed down with a water blast that actually washes away her shirt!!!!! Not to mention that she freely wandered around the halls of a MENTAL ASYLUM unaccompanied and wearing only a belly shirt and panties. Just doesn't seem safe, does it?

Gordon usually throws in a bit of nudity in most of his flicks. But it usually only enhances or is purposeful in telling the story.

I've always wondered, is this based on the EAP short story?

Loosely based I believe. As are most Poe flicks.

I wish they would return to this caliber of filmmaking. The cast is a large part of why it's so damn good. A lot of veterans in this thing.
