Boy Thought He Just Had An Earache...He Didn't Know Spiders Were Living In His Ear

Doctor Finds Spiders In Ear Of Boy With Earache

Albany, Oregon -- These guys were not exactly Snap, Crackle and Pop.

What began as a faint popping in a 9-year-old boy's ear -- "like Rice Krispies" -- ended up as an earache, and the doctor's diagnosis was that a pair of spiders made a home in the ear.

"They were walking on my eardrums," Jesse Courtney said.

One of the spiders was still alive after the doctor flushed the fourth-grader's left ear canal. His mother, Diane Courtney, said her son insisted he kept hearing a faint popping in his ear -- "like Rice Krispies."

Dr. David Irvine said it looked like the boy had something in his ear when he examined him.

When he irrigated the ear, the first spider came out, dead. The other spider took a second dousing before it emerged, still alive. Both were about the size of a pencil eraser.

Jesse was given the spiders -- now both dead -- as a souvenir. He has taken them to school and his mother has taken them to work.

Snap, crackle and pop.
Is that Rice Crispies you hear or spiders walking on your eardrums?

I can see how that would help them sell :p

Where did you hear about this? From what newspaper/website?

Its ok I found it on the CNN website unfortunately. Recently I have been watching lots of spider films and becoming disturbed at night - I read somewhere that spider will not lay eggs in us but it seems they like to take up residence in our orifices!

I remember when I first saw this story on the news. I started thinking about the one spider being dead and the other one alive. Now, #1 dead spider could have died during the examination or the flushing of the boy's ear, but...I don't know if all spiders do this, but I know with at least some spider species the female kills the male after they mate. If that was the case, just think if she had laid a nice plump egg sack in his ear that didn't get flushed out. Horror movie in the making... :D
