TMZ reports that Universal Pictures has signed The Fast and the Furious and XXX helmer Rob Cohen to direct the third installment in "The Mummy" franchise. The site says that the studio is expected to make it official later this week.

It was previously reported that "Smallville" creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were writing a reimagining of the first two films. Brendan Fraser was said to be reprising his role of Rick O'Connell. Rachel Weisz has said she "would definitely like to be in it."

An offer was also made to director Joe Johnston (Hidalgo, Jurassic Park III) to helm at one point. Stephen Sommers directed the first two films.

Well, its not like it would improve or hurt the quality of the series.

Especially if somehow you could use it prior to the first sequel, and the conan wanna-be.
No problem with the first, but god DAMN was the second pathetic by comparison...what, they decided there wasn't enough comedy in the first? It was relatively well balanced for a "family" action/adventure/monster kind've affair, everything from then on though, was just way too over the top and STUPID. Zombified pygmies and Jet Baloons? Pfft.

See, I watched both Mummy movies and Scorpion King as silly adventure movies with no ties to the original Mummy at all (other than the shared name). Sure, they weren't on par with Indiana Jones, but I had fun watching them with the fam.
