Student accused of raping, shocking homeless woman

LAFAYETTE, Ind.— A Purdue University student was being held Thursday after he was accused of taking a homeless woman captive, shocking her with a stun gun and repeatedly raping her.

Jeffrey E. Akard, 32, was scheduled to appear in court in Tippecanoe Superior Court Thursday. Akard has been held in the Tippecanoe County Jail under $500,000 bond since his arrest early Sunday on preliminary charges of rape, confinement, possession of child pornography and marijuana possession.

The 28-year-old woman told police she had tried to help a man who appeared to be drunk find his way home early Saturday, but once they arrived at the house he held her captive for about 15 hours, raped her repeatedly, shocked her with a stun gun, drugged her, threatened her with a handgun and showed her child pornography.

"She's going to have a lot of problems. But she's doing pretty good right now," said police Det. Dan Shumaker.

According to a police affidavit, Akard let the woman go about 5 p.m. Saturday after she woke up and pretended she didn't remember what had happened. She immediately ran to a nearby home and called police.

The woman pointed out the house and identified Akard from a photo array, police said.

Akard was arrested early Sunday after a police SWAT team entered the home armed with a search warrant. Shumaker said police recovered a .357 Magnum and a pellet gun, a small amount of marijuana, physical evidence related to the alleged rape and confinement and several thousand computer images depicting child pornography.

Akard was acquitted in January on unrelated misdemeanor battery charges involving his ex-girlfriend.

Shumaker said he also found records of previous arrests of Akard in Georgia on suspicion of making terrorist threats, carrying a concealed weapon, aggravated assault and drunken driving.
