Flag Football Turns Ugly: Players Start Shooting

Witnesses Report Hearing About 50 Shots

Anchorage, Alaska -- Talk about rough play. Players in a flag football game in Anchorage began firing shots after an argument during one of the plays.

One player was seriously injured.

Players and spectators scrambled for the exits, even climbing a chain link fence to get out of the open-air Anchorage Football Stadium.

Witnesses said they thought at least 50 shots were fired during the game Sunday night. Police suspect there were multiple shooters.

Officials said play in the pickup game, with participants ranging in age from 16 to their mid-20s, became especially tense late in the match. There was an argument, which turned into a disturbance, then somebody pulled out a gun and started firing into the crowd.

Daniel L. Leituala, 21, was in serious condition after being shot in the shoulder and below his left eye, police said. He had played in the game but was not involved in the scuffle, police said.

Police have arrested no one and are seeking help from witnesses.
