If alot of brand new dvds you're buying keep messing up maybe it's your player rather than the disc.

That seems most logical to me too. Can you get anything to play on it, IDYB? How old is your dvd player?

Sometimes if DVDs don't want to play, you can fix 'em by washing them with water and liquid soap. It's worked for me a few times. Just make sure you've dried it off really well before you put it back in your player!

He might need to have that shit taken apart and have it professionally cleaned. My mom's CD player that my dad bought sometime in like 1993 played CD's just fine until about a year ago. Says "no disc in player" or it'll skip than say the "no disc" message. I've tried wiping the CD's off, clean the inside unit out with swabs, and damn if thing isn't filthy inside.

Well I do seem to see some gunk on the disc so i might just use my cd doctor to try and fix it, but ill try and take it back to wal-mart today first.

ewww - i totally do NOT want to know what that "gunk" on your disc was (and you should be ashamed of yourself - yuck)

Here's the other thing although it more highly prone with CD's rather than DVD's. It's not the shiny part you have to be extremely careful with as you can always have the shiny side resurfaced to eliminate the scratches. It's the painted side. If you get deep scratches on the painted surface and you're able to see the shiny part underneath, the laser might be able to "see though" the CD/DVD, and it won't play at all. I try to be just as careful with both sides just to be safe.
By the way, what "gunk" was on the DVD? All I can suggest is take it back, and if it happens again, then take the player and have it professionally cleaned.
